What have been watching lately on Netflix

Sunday, 6 February 2022

It's been a while since I have done one of those, find my last one here. So what has been my favorite lately? Some expected and some great surprise. Let me share it with you.

ARCHIVE 81

This is one that I did not know about it, did not see being advertised, and heard anyone talking about but it was in my recommendation list and I gave it a go.Well, let's say I was hooked, perhaps not on the 1st episode but definitely as soon as the story and the characters were set. I am rubbish at explaining synopsis so here is one I picked up online ( credit of FANSIDED) to give you an idea of what its about:

'Inspired by the popular podcast of the same name, Archive 81 depicts the life of a man who comes across videotapes full of a mysterious woman’s adventures in an even more mysterious apartment building.
What seemed to be an ordinary job turns into a nightmare as the strange creature that took the woman’s life in the past seems to have found a way back to him 25 years in the future. What is the source of this strange connection, and will he be able to crack the case? You’ll have to tune in to find out.'

If Sci-Fi mystery kind of series or movie is your thing then I strongly suggest this series. I expect a season 2 but no official date has been set, having said that this particular season does finish with an opening door for more so has a good potential for a season2.

I'll give this series a 4 and 1/2 out of 5 stars .

ALICE IN BORDELAND

This is a Japanese series, just like K-drama have been a lover of Asian series, movies, and especially Manga since I was like 8 or 9 years old. Back in those days, manga had a strong influence (and still does) and many years later, when the World Wide Web was becoming more available to everyone, Japanese and Korean films/ series follows.
Not influenced by the Squid Game effect I am proud to say that Asian TV has always been part of my life and even more now since the last 10 years or so since it is much easier to get your hand on some, thanks to platforms such as YouTube and Netflix of course.
Alice in Borderland, which is originally a well-known manga (find it here) was on my Netflix Wish list for weeks until I finally found the time to watch it and I wasn't disappointed. Once again as I am the worst at explaining sypnosis, so please see the one below from IMDb .

Arisu and his two best friends Chota and Karube are hiding in a subway toilet chased by police. When they leave it they find that all the people of Tokyo have disappeared and the city is empty. Then they will be forced to participate in life and death games with the only option being victory otherwise those who do not participate in the games are executed by the creator of the games.

Once again this science-fiction drama thriller would get you to grip to your sit. Season 2 is expected but no date has yet been confirmed by Netflix.
I strongly suggest you watch this series in the original Japanese version with English sub. If not ...the dub is available too if you prefer.

I'll give this one 4 and a half stars out of 5.

MIDNIGHT MASS

I came randomly on this Netflix series Midnight Mass, I think it was suggested on my profile. and Not really have a clue on what it was about but just by seeing that it was a mystery, horror, vampire 'ish' and drama kind of mini Series I just jumped in with my 2 feet and it did not get disappointed. Once again I'll leave IMDb to do the sypnosis for me:

The tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man and the arrival of a charismatic priest. When Father Paul's appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community - but do these miracles come at a price?

My only criticism comes from the length of some of the dialogues as they can be a bit too long and too ' god related'  (I am not a religious person) to me but if you passed this, it's a great Mini-Series to binge-watch.  Well acted, great special effect, and get your grip on your sofa until the last episode. Being a mini-series NO season 2. So this mini-series has an actual end and an explanation for all the events that occur.
Sometimes it's great to watch a series that only lasts a season (let's be honest I can't not always commit to a series that last up to 10 seasons (apart from perhaps: Stranger Things but that is another post for another time).

I'll give this mini-series 4 stars out of 5.

So here you have it. I hope this would help you choose your next binge-watch series if all the above are your cup of tea.

Have you've been watching the above or thinking to or do you have any suggestion? Tell me all by commenting below.

Thanks for reading.
